MSV Duisburg, led by their team captain Bjoern Schlicke, are today celebrating promotion to the Bundesliga after they won their final second division match of the season. The traditional club from Germany's deep West joins champions Karlsruher SC, who had already clinched a spot in the German top flight. Duisburg recorded a 3-0 success against visitors SC Rot-Weiss Essen. Bundesliga leaders Schalke have agreed personal terms with our client and Arminia Bielefeld defender Heiko Westermann. The 23-year-old stopper looks certain to leave the Schuco Arena at the end of the season and Schalke general manager Andreas Muller says he wants to join the Royal Blues. "He has decided to continue his career with us," he confirmed on Thursday after agreeing a four-year deal with the player. "All we have to do now is agree terms with Bielefeld." Westermann is contracted at Arminia until June 2008 and is expected to command a fee of around €2million (£1.35million) for a summer move.
The agent of former Bahrain national football team head coach Hans-Peter Briegel yesterday lashed out at false claims that his client was dismissed from his post, and clarified that it was Briegel’s personal decision to leave. Koenig made the clarification after repeated reports in international media that the former West Germany defender was dismissed from his position with the team. Speaking exclusively to Bahrain Tribune, Oliver Koenig said: “Briegel was never sacked. This is all a big misunderstanding.” Koenig explained of Briegel’s decision: “He came here to do one thing, and that was to win. But it was all these things around the team that was causing a lot of trouble that he felt would not allow him to be successful.
