Germany blew the opening party at London's new Wembley Stadium with a 2-1 (2-1) friendly win on Wednesday. England were not outplayed as Germany ensured they were the last full international team to win at the old Wembley and the first to win at the rebuilt stadium. Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard put England ahead in the ninth minute but a bad mistake by England goalkeeper Paul Robinson gifted Schalke striker Kevin Kuranyi an equaliser in the 26th minute. Schalke left-back Christian Pander, making his Germany debut, scored the winner in the 40th minute, blasting past Robinson from distance after a skilful build-up. Roberto Hilbert earned his third cap as a substitute after 54 minutes.
German coach Joachim Löw has called-upon our client Robert Hilbert once more to bolster-up the Mannschaft for the upcoming game against England in Wembley (Wednesday, August 22, 8 P.M. local time). The midfielder from VfB Stuttgart, the reigning Bundesliga champions, will meet the rest of the team in Frankfurt on Sunday. Löw was forced to juggle the line-up due to various players cancelling because of injuries, most notably captain Michael Ballack (FC Chelsea), who has just started practicing again following a left ankle injury. Lukas Podolski (FC Bayern München) will also be unable to make the trip to England. The German delegation departs for London on Tuesday morning. Löw's injury woes grew even more severe, when Werder Bremen's Tim Borowski got banged up at the beginning of the season. Just a few days earlier, midfielder Torsten Frings (Werder Bremen) had suffered a knee injury, that will keep him sidelined for a few weeks. Finally, Germany's attack is weakened because of the cancellations of Jan Schlaudraff (Bayern München) and Mario Gomez (VfB Stuttgart), who had been voted "Best Player 2006/2007" by the German media.
Striker Christian Eigler has been voted "Man of the Match" by Germany's leading football magazin "Kicker" in Arminia Bielefeld thrilling 3:0 away win against Felix Magath's VfL Wolfsburg. The 2006 2nd Bundesliga topscorer and former Under 21 international scored one goal and assisted another goal in the season opener. 23-year-old Eigler is in his second season in the German top flight after joining Bielefeld from Greuther Fürth in 2006.
