Schaefer guides Dubai's Al Ahli to the UAE title

Our client Winfried "Winni" Schaefer guided Dubai's Al Ahli Club to regain the Emirates Football League crown after 26 years since they had taken the inaugural event in 1971. The Dubai club handed a 4-1 thrashing to the defending champions, Al Wahda, in Friday's play-off at the Tahnoun bin Mohammed Stadium in Al Ain. Winnie Schaefer's men took a firm 2-0 lead in the first session and then doubled the score in the second half after Al Wahda had pulled one back through a spot kick from Bosnian Slavisa Mitrovic in the 71st minute. Ten minutes after this Basheer Saeed's free-kick crashed against the woodwork. Salem Khamis opened the scoring from a 17th minute penalty and former Iran international Farhad Majidi made it 2-0 seven minutes later to set the platform for Al Ahli. Faisal Khalil increased the lead with a third goal approaching the hour and the fourth came when a clearance from goalkeeper Abdulla Mousa took a bizarre header from one of the two Al Wahda defenders, standing between Faisal, to loop over Abdulbaset Mohammed into the vacant goal. Al Ahli having taken a 2-0 lead in the first quarter of the game didn't allow their opponents to take that advantage away at any stage of the contest. They were well organised in defence and were the more dangerous in attack with Majidi and Faisal being in the thick of the action. They won a penalty when Abdulsalam Jumaa brought down Uruguay pro Martin Parodi, who rushed for a pass from Majidi in front of the post. The decision was a bit harsh on Al Wahda midfielder as TV replays showed he had his foot on the ball without touching the player. Majidi doubled the score from a defensive mistake. A cross from Paroudi went through Omar Ali Omar and Faisal Khalil for the unmarked Iran striker to gleefully tap in the ball into the back of the net on the far post. Al Wahda, stung by the second goal ,stepped up their offensive play. They made several raids but they either broke down or couldn't get past the Al Ahli defence. Saleh Al Menhali had the best chance but his weak shot from close range went straight to Mousa.
